Google Has Decided to Axe Hangouts On Air

As of September 12, Google+ Hangouts will no longer be available and users will be asked to use You Tube Live instead. Existing events scheduled for after the 12th will have to be moved to You Tube Live.

Brief History of Google+ Hangouts On Air

Hangouts On Air, Google’s group video chat, has been available since September 2011, at first to select celebrities and performers and to the rest of the public since May 2012. Then one year later in May 2013, Google launched You Tube Live. Now Google has decided to amalgamate the 2 platforms, leveraging You Tube’s infrastructure to increase the device compatibility of Hangouts on Air, as well as to store streams post-broadcast.

Hangouts Won't Disappear Entirely

Just to be clear, Hangouts On Air will still exist in some form, it just won’t be tied to Google+. To use Hangouts On Air with You Tube Live, follow these steps:

  • Go to Live Streaming Events in Creator Studio
  • Click New Live Event
  • Select Quick (using Google Hangouts On Air)
  • Name your live stream
  • Click Go Live Now or enter in details to schedule your event for later
  • Use Hangouts to broadcast live

Recorded events will still be available on You Tube. The only remaining Google+ link will be the option to see your event content in read-only format in the Activity Log.
